Introduction

Welcome to a site dedicated to trainers, a footwear item designed for outdoor pursuits, sports and athletics. They have also become a fashion apparel, and are worn by many people for casual wear in their everyday life. The rubber sole allowed people to move around without making much noise, so in America were named 'Sneakers'.

In the past few decades trainers have gone through a revolution, once a basic rubber sole and canvas, they are now computer designed with air pockets and gel filled soles. The gel filled trainers are usually designed for athletics and basketball. The Air Jordan trainer designed by Nike was the first to introduce an air pocket into the heal. In basketball it involves alot of jumping in the air, therefore the heel takes a real pounding when landing.

Running trainers likewise take alot of pressure on the heel area. But obviously not to the same degree as basketball, where a seven foot eighteen stone individual lands on a hard surface from four feet in the air. Therefore running trainers usually incorporate a gel formula into the heel or a much smaller air pocket. Some have rubber which has carbon added into it to make it more durable. They are also much lighter and professional running shoes include spikes.

One of the first companies to introduce spikes was Reebok, a company based in Bolton, UK and were originally named J.W. Foster and Sons. They later introduced a manufacturing process for trainers still used today, which is called vulcanisation. This is a system for melding canvas materials to a rubber sole.

The casual trainer market has also changed over the past decade. In the 1980's for example the people wearing trainers for sports or casual wear would be wearing the exact same model of trainers. But with the introduction of air capsules and gel filled heels trainers began to become unfashionable and far too geeky and scientific.

Basically the fashionable wouldn't be seen dead in a pair of air filled Nike's. This was obviously a problem for the manufacturer's because the majority of their income came from sales to people wearing trainers as a fashion accessory. The solution they came up with was the retro trainers.

The like of Adidias, Converse and Puma went back in time when air filled soles were the domain of science fiction. And it worked. Sales rebounded, and still a decade later retro trainers make up the majority of sales for casual users. It also ushered in the era of designer trainers.

Once a upon time the major fashion houses and designer would look down upon the sports trainer industry and mock, likewise with jeans. But money is a great motivater, and the likes of Ted Baker in the UK soon started to release designer trainers.

The retro trainer was the catalyst. Before this time they will have assumed you need some fancy geeky selling point to shift trainers off the shelves. But the retro trainer proved the casual user just wanted something that looked good and was more comfortable than a formal pair of shoes.
